Es ceru, ka tas man iemācīs latviešu valodu. Lai nu kā būtu aizraujoši redzēt, kā idejas tiek izteiktas latviešu valodā. Kaut gan es domāju, ka dzimtie latvieši to dara savādāk.
I hope this will teach me Latvian. Anyway, it's fascinating to see how ideas are expressed in Latvian. Though I think that native Latvians do it differently.
Writing in Latvian with the tools
Vispirms es pats cenšos uzrakstīt teikumu latviešu valodā. Tas ir ļoti grūti. Tad es uzrakstu teikumu hugo tulkotājam. Tas atsakās tulkot vai rada muļķības. Pēc tam es rakstu savu teikumu angļu valodā un ļauju Hugo to tulkot. Ja rezultāts šķiet labs, pārtulkoju to atpakaļ uz angļu valodu. Pēc dažu rediģēšanas nozīmes saglabājas. Dažreiz es izmantoju arī google translate un pat franču valodu, lai veiktu papildu pārbaudi. Kad teikums šķiet ok, es no vārdnīcas meklēju vārdus, kas man ir jauni. Kas arī atklāj, kā izskatās lietvārdu gadījumi un kur tos izmantot. Diemžēl automātiskie tulkotāji pieļauj gramatisku kļūdu.
First I try to write a sentence in Latvian myself. It is very difficult. Then I write the sentence to the hugo translator. It refuses to translate or produces nonsense. Then I write my sentence in English and let Hugo translate it. If the result seems fine, I translate it back to English. After some editing, the meaning preserves. Sometimes I also use google translator and even French to do an extra check. When the sentence seems ok, I search words new to me from the dictionary. That also reveals what the cases of nouns look like and where to use them. Unfortunately automatic translators make grammatical mistakes.
Lai tiešām iemācītos rakstīt latviešu valodā, vajadzētu rakstīt bez tulkotājiem, bet tas ir par lēnu un garlaicīgu. Vispirms man ir jāmācās vairāk latviešu valoda.
To really learn to write in Latvian, I should write without translators, but that is too slow and boring. First I have to learn more Latvian.
Reading Latvian
Bērnu grāmatas ir viegli lasīt. Ideāli piemērots iesācējiem. Nepareizi. Es uzzināju, ka tos ir grūti izlasīt.
Children's books are easy to read. Ideal for beginners. Wrong. I learnt that they are difficult to read.
Nopirku bērnu grāmatu “Aino Pervika: Prezidents”. Pirmajai nodaļai ir divarpus lappušu. Man bija vajadzīgas divas stundas, lai to izlasītu. Tulkotāju izmantoju tikai ārkārtas situācijās.
I bought a children's book "Aino Pervika: Prezidents". The first chapter has two and a half pages. It took me two hours to read it. I used the translator only in emergency situations.
Bija pāris teikumu, kurus es sapratu bez vārdnīcas. Daudzus teikumus es sapratu ar vārdnīcas palīdzību. Par dažiem teikumiem atradu tulkojumu angļu valodā, bet tas neiederējās stāstā. Tad es izmantoju tulkotājus. Viņi kļūdas, bet parasti atšķiras no manām kļūdām. Kombinējot divus kļūdainus teikumus, var izdarīt vienu pareizu.
There were a couple of sentences which I understood without a dictionary. Many sentences I understood with the help of an dictionary. For some sentences I found an interpretation in English, but it did not fit into the story. Then I utilized the translators. They make errors, but usually different from my errors. Combining two erroneous sentences may make one correct.
Nākamajā dienā es vēlreiz izlasīju pirmo nodaļu. Tomēr man bija vajadzīga vārdnīca, lai to saprastu. Par laimi mazāk, ka pirmo reizi. Tātad, lasīt bērnu grāmatas latviešu valodā iesācējiem nav viegli. Tomēr man patīk 'prezidents' un es to visu izlasīs. Jau pirms aizbraukšanas no Rīgas.
The next day I read the first chapter again. Still I needed a dictionary to understand it. Fortunately less that the first time. So, reading children's books in Latvian is not easy for beginners. However, I like 'prezidents' and I will read it all. Already before I leave Rīga.
